A Day In The Life

I've probably already done this at some point but never at mid-season, so I'm going to go through a typical day in Manchester through the eyes of myself as a professional hockey player.  My next post will be of a topic that I choose from my Twitter followers' suggestions.

7:45 AM - Wake up alarm goes off and I scramble to hit snooze.
8:00 AM - Finally get out of bed after two snoozes and put in my contacts and brush my teeth.  Sometimes I'll take the dog out for a leak and feed her breakfast while I make my breakfast. Breakfast is usually a bagel with peanut butter on it or some sort of eggs. When Gillian cooks breakfast I get pancakes, eggs, and bacon.
8:25 AM - Jump in the "Big Rig" and head to Verizon Wireless Arena.
8:50 AM - Roll into the locker room and greet the boys.  Pour a cup of coffee and get changed into my gitch.  Warm-up a bit and get dressed for practice at least 10 minutes before practice starts.
10:00 AM - Practice starts.  I work hard, try to get better at hockey, listen to what the coaches have to say, and work with the team.  The length of practice depends on what day of the week it is and when our next game is.
11:30 AM - Usually I am off the ice by now on a regular day and hitting the showers shortly after I get off the ice and undressed, unless there is a workout following practice.
12:00 PM - Head back home from VWA.  When I arrive at home Gillian usually has lunch ready for me unless we decide to go out for lunch together.  Lunch is always followed with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.  I need to mix in some more NHL '12 to get my score up, but Duty is my number 1 priority.  If I feel like I need some more rest I will take a nap for no more than 2 hours.
4:00 PM - Do any sort of errand or chore that Gillian wants to do.  Grocery shop or pick up supplies from Target or Wal-Mart for things around the house.
5:00 PM - Dinner time! My favorite dinner is steak.  I love steak.  For anyone who doesn't eat steak, I'll eat an extra one for you next time!
6:00 PM - More Duty.  Now everyone in the normal world with a normal job can get on duty and play with me and the boys.  Czarnik is almost guaranteed to be online whenever you log on.  After this session of Xbox I usually call my parents, family, friends, etc. to catch up.
8:00 PM - Time for me to start winding down and watch TV.  I like to watch a lot of NHL games in my spare time.  I enjoy watching the Kings play because I'm familiar with the guys and the style of play.  Its a good way for me to learn more about the game also.  If I'm not watching hockey then I like to watch National Geographic or Discovery Channel.  Surprisingly, I also enjoy reading and learning.  You wouldn't think that coming from a guy who never graduated after going to college for 4 years.  I got caught up a little in the college hockey lifestyle.
11:00 PM - I'm in bed and watching shows on the computer or on TV, whichever one Gillian chooses.  Once I'm in bed it takes from 1 minute to 15 minutes for me to fall asleep.  Just a day in the life of Ray Kaunisto.

rayk71 vs Twitter

I've been hearing lately that I need to update my blog, so with help from my friends on twitter I am putting a little something together. Currently I am in LA about to start rookie camp. My roomy at camp is Rich Clune... What a beauty

The biggest beauty in Manch is me, obviously. Just kidding. But for real I would say Z and Jordan Hill were contenders. My name for those two this year as a combo was "The Beautards"

My favorite part of the movie slapshot is when one of the brothers gets bothered by a Ref and says while all bloodied up during the anthem, "I'm trying to listen to the fucking song!"

I ate fried potatoes for lunch.

I hate Ben and Jerry's ice cream because of their new flavor "Schweddy Balls". Ew!

Number 1 on LA Kings list for success this year I would say they need to stay healthy to win the cup.

Twitter blows Facebook out of the water.

I will put myself 1st line with Kope and Browny in NHL12.

A day in life of RayK consists of trying to make people laugh and get better at hockey and try to not get into trouble.

The greatest joy of off season training is getting out of the gym after it's over. Although I do like squats and weighing myself and seeing gains.

Top 10 Twitter Follows

Lately I've been back home in the beautiful Upper Peninsula in Sault Ste. Marie MI working out and skating and altogether getting ready for the upcoming season as summer winds down to a close. So I decided to do a little filler blog post about my favorite twitter follows. Here is the list of my top 10 favorites.

10. @kooshdawg. Koosh is my brother and plays college hockey at NMU where I graduated from. Best reason to follow is because he knows all the new hockey lingo and ruthlessly chirps all of our buddies.

9. @gillybeans5. Gillian is my wife and has some great tweets that are funny and posts pics of my dog Kaija all the time. Top reason to follow is to keeps tabs on her while I'm away from Vancouver.

8. @sheriffjim. This guy is a country music singer from Texas who used to be a sheriff. He has funny tweets about politics and is a gun loving Texan who takes shots at liberals all the time.

7. @Justinbieber. Simply put, I need the biebs on my follow list so his name is readily available for a good chirp.

6. @kozy15. Kozy constantly chirps me on twitter and that earns him a spot on the list. He is always fair game for a short joke.

5. @mayorNHL. The mayor is a great LA Kings follow for up to date articles on everything Kings on and off the ice.

4. @NHL. This is the ultimate NHL news leader on twitter and retweets new NHL guys on twitter and has some great links to NHL articles.

3. @Jesus_M_Christ. I don't know who runs this account but they are hilarious. So wrong but so funny. Constantly chirps Tim Tebow.

2. @biznasty2point0. Biz has a great sense of humor and loves to cross the line. Throws in some great hockey lingo and chirps. Always has great twitpics and retweets his followers a lot.

1. @bozie42. It doesn't get any better for me following Bozak. Sick NHL player who played college hockey and follows me and tweets back to fans all the time. Always has great pics and constantly shares what he is doing. Another great reason to follow him is he chirps @pmullen14 and I love when mully gets carved by the boys.

Inside A Leg Workout From This Week

Some people have been asking me to post my workout, but I really can't post the whole thing, so I will tell everyone about one of my leg routines this week.  I start out with a prehabilitation routine, which means stability and ab work, then I go through my dynamic warmup, which they take up to 3 hours to finish before I can even start my lifts for the day.  I usually end my day with a hot tub at home, or a steam room or sauna at the gym.

Legs lift

Clean 5x3
Snatch 5x3
1-leg Physio Ball Squat 4x5 each leg
Deadlift 5x3
1-leg squat on bench (shoot the duck) 3x5 each leg
Step Under Side Squat 3x5 each way
30 sec Bosu wall sit with 45lb plate

All of these lifts are obviously done with weight.  I usually go a little lighter on the snatch lift because I am not flexible and that takes a lot of flexibility. There is a leg lift for anyone that is interested in trying it out!

European Emigration

To whom it may concern,

From a pro hockey player's perspective, I think if another player goes to Europe it could mean a few different things.  Here is my list of reasons to leave...

1. More money
  a. (than semi pro level aka AHL or ECHL)
  b. (more money on next NHL contract, aka Jagr, or bargaining power with NHL team)
2. Experience Europe
3. Career Change
  a. (some teams in Europe pay for your college degree while you play, helping you to another career)
4. Next best level of play for more money

So, as I look back at these reasons, I have to assume the most powerful reason to leave for Europe from all angles is money.  It is always sad to see a team mate leave your team prematurely, but teams change constantly year to year, even month to month sometimes.  You just need to stay positive and be happy for the guy who leaves and wish them the best of luck, since they made a decision that they felt they needed to make to take their career or life in the direction they feel is for the better.  So in the case of some guys going to Europe this year (Bud, Elks, and Oscar) I sincerely wish them the best of luck and hopefully I'll have the privilege of playing with them again in the future.

And I want to give Bud a special thanks for coming to my wedding this weekend in Vancouver and showing everyone here how to dance and sip out of a centerpiece.

I'm Back

After a couple weeks with a lot going on getting ready for the wedding, I'm back and ready to blog.  First of all, I had a great time at my wedding and was so happy to see all the people come out and enjoy the day with Gillian and I.  More guys that I played with along the years came out than I expected so that really fired me up for the reception.  It's always a treat when the boys all get together especially for a big party, since we all know hockey players know how to party... really, really well.

Last week my parents flew up to Vancouver and we headed up to a place called Gun Lake (here's a link to a pic of it http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nD7SquMgLgw/TAP5nCEs0MI/AAAAAAAABy8/22-teo7AXZ4/s1600/Gun+Lake.jpg )  We went on the 4 wheelers up the mountains and through the trails checking out some nice lookouts and other lakes along the way.  I only got to go fishing for a half hour so I didnt catch anything, but Gillian caught a nice Rainbow Trout, which we cooked up on the fire when we got back to the cabin.  I was really hoping to see a Grizzly bear but no luck in that department.  I blame not seeing one on Brian Stewart, my brother-in-law, since where ever we went he was doing everything to avoid seeing one.  He has serious issues with bears.  I'll have to look up the proper phobia name for his condition and tweet at him publicly.

Back to work this week for me though.  Me and my brother headed to the gym today to crush some muscle fibers in our legs and are about to go outside and stickhandle golf balls for an hour.  Time to get back into shape and get ready for camp
